Chapter Thirty-One

Ally

What kind of host would I be if I made him sleep on the floor? I couldn't justify it. I would sleep on the floor, and he would take the bed. That was the end of it.

"What?" he said, bewildered. So much so he almost spit out his water. He looked like he may not have even contemplated the bedding situation.

"No, you can't do that! Your shoulder is hurt."

Admittedly, my shoulder did still hurt. But it was much less now that the warm water had eased out some of the kinks in the muscles.

"I'll be fine.” I waved my hand in the air. "I'll make a cot on the floor."

"No," he said adamantly.

"You can't stop me," I said before I could stop myself. He'd hit my argumentative button now. I crossed my arms and stared him down.

"Wanna bet?" He grinned. He looked absolutely goofy in that robe. I couldn't take him seriously.

"Yeah, I do," I said.

"Fine," he said, "I'll just wait until you're asleep and then pick you up and trade you places."

My jaw hung open, aghast. Even Olivia gave out a concerned meow as she looked between us.

"You wouldn't dare!" My hand flew to my chest.

He laughed. "Oh, I would."

His face was completely open and honest. He was insufferable! Oh my gosh!

"Well," I sputtered, my eyes narrowing, "you couldn't even pick me up if you wanted to."

I was sure of that. There was no way a man with an office job could scoop me up and put me in that bed. Catching me when I fell was one thing, but carrying me was another. I wasn't a lightweight.

He cleared his throat, took a step closer, squatted, never breaking eye contact with me, and hauled me up into his arms in a fireman's carry.

"You were saying?" he said, his voice low.

He stepped closer to the bed with me cradled against his chest.

He was so pleased with himself. Meanwhile, my brain was scrambled. What was this I was feeling? I was overcome with a warm, calming sensation. His hands were touching my bare skin and being this close to his chest, I could feel his heartbeat. I could fall right to sleep like this.

WAIT A MINUTE. WE WERE FIGHTING! WHAT THE HECK?

I started squirming and he put me down. Smart man. I could… I don't know, I could do something crazy! He couldn't just pick me up like that.

"See," he said, "told you. You should get in the bed."

"No." I stamped my foot. "And if you move me when I fall asleep, I'll just… move back!"

"You are so stubborn," he laughed, absolutely bewildered as he rubbed his temples.

"You're the one who refuses to just take the bed!" I said, my fists balled up at my sides.

"How about I make you a deal?" He smiled softly, his eyes trailing the wet curls of hair that had escaped from my towel.

"How about I promise not to move you after you fall asleep and I take the bed?" I glared at him sideways. Was he giving up?

"Ok," I said, a little confused.
